The Asian honeybee (Apis cerana)has several native names in the Philippines Apis cerana make their home in enclosed areas which includes old trees, holes and small caves in the ground or possibly in human dwellings such as roof spaces etc.

Ligwan foragers tend to collect either pollen or nectar from a single species of plant, continuing to collect pollen or nectar from that plant throughout the day.

  • An Asian bee called (APIS CERANA). It’s scientific name comes from its native language in the Philippines.  “ALIG, LAYWAN or LIGWAN”, as it’s commonly used commercially.  Apis Cerana can be found in enclosed places that includes big old trees,  holes and small cavings underground or even in human house spaces like roofs.  These bees are quite small, about 1 cm in size with brown striped bodies.  Apis Cerana colonies build their combs to about 9 parallel combs, with each of about 20 cm long. The outer layer combs and top portion contains honey whilst the central portion of the combs are mainly for the eggs and developing bees.  Stages of larvae to pupa (the Brood).
